We together can improve therapeutic policy, maximize psychologists' abilities, help clients more, and better society!
Modern philosophy has enriched our society with valuable insights while also introducing harmful ideas. One of the most damaging is the notion that we must uncritically accept anything that feels good. This mindset has seeped into our culture and the mental health field, compelling therapists to adopt Affirmation Therapy as a mandated framework. Affirmation Therapy demands that therapists affirm, celebrate, and incorporate any client-presented identity into a strengths-based model, irrespective of what evidence-based research, studies, or proven outcomes indicate is truly beneficial for the client. We contend that this non-evidence-based practice inflicts harm on individuals, potentially trapping them in unwanted identities—as tragically illustrated by Robert Westman, the recent shooter in Minnesota. Moreover, Affirmation Therapy hinders therapists from delving into and addressing underlying issues, whether directly related to identity or not. We urge the American Psychological Association (APA) to reconsider its support for and promotion of Affirmation Therapy. Please join our movement to compel mental health governing bodies to reevaluate this approach, empowering therapists with the full spectrum of tools needed to deliver optimal care.
This initiative seeks not division, but unity—rallying exceptional therapists worldwide to unlock pathways for clients to pursue and cultivate their authentic, deepest aspirations.
